Western New Yorker David Bellavia to receive Medal of Honor Tuesday



were it not for David Bellavia I wouldn't be sitting here today David Bell V is one of those guys that exemplifies selfless service and sacrifice to see a man before such an act of valor that was humbling to the home I walked into situations that were happening in real time and just have to react to it and that's what I did were honoring a you know a great soldier a great American who did some pretty incredible things today a western New York war hero takes center stage in our nation's capitol President Trump is set to bestow the Medal of Honor on David Bellavia the former staff sergeant will become the first living veteran of the Iraq war to receive the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force right now Buffalo is honoring Bellavia we have 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Slauson live in downtown Buffalo Jeff tell us how to honor Staff Sergeant David Bellavia the City of Buffalo City Hall lit up in white blue and gold today it's the honor his heroics not only in Iraq but his heroics that are leading to the reception of the Medal of Honor later today Bellavia enlisted in the Army in 1999 and was released in 2005 during his time in the Army he was serving as a squad leader in Fallujah he was clearing houses when his platoon was pinned down and Bellavia started shooting at insurgents so his squad could escape he left the house but then wanted back inside to ensure his team safety and the ensuing gunfight he killed five people it's that moment that he is being honored for Bellavia says that this medal of honor has given him a new calling the army gave me purpose and direction the army gave me meaning I'm forever grateful to the United States Army and I want to be of service to my army I want to bring as many young men and women to join the military as possible staff sergeant Bellavia also said that this is giving him a time to honor those that didn't make it during that pollution battle President Trump who is honoring Bellavia said in a press release that Bellavia saved many members of his platoon from imminent threat this will be bellavia's second honor from his time serving in Iraq the first was getting the Silver Star a huge honor that he'll be receiving today with the Medal of Honor at 3 o'clock live in Buffalo Jeff Slauson 7 Eyewitness News and if you want to watch David Bellavia received that Medal of Honor today you're gonna be able to do so right here on 7 ABC we're gonna carry the ceremony live on air around 3:30 while also streaming for you on our web site and our free app
