PM Modi Receives Award From Bill Gates


Billionaire Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates both founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation works to improve people’s lives in different countries. It is the richest foundation in the world. The Foundation has an award called the Goalkeeper Award. This award is given to leaders who work hard to remove poverty, inequality and help in development. On 25th September 2019, Bill Gates gave this award to PM Modi. Why was he given the award? PM Modi had launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on 2nd October 2014. The programme yielded many positive results and people were very inpired by PM Modi. People were motivated to keep India clean. PM Modi was given the award because he brought about a big change in India. PM Modi said that the award given by Bill Gates is not for himself alone. It is for all the people in India. It is because of the Indian citizens that the programme was so successful. He said in the last five years, more than 11 crore toilets were constructed. This was done for women because they suffer from many problems. Women hold on to their urine and stool till evening to go out to defecate. Many girls had to drop out of school due to the lack of toilets in schools. PM Modi said that the Indian government’s aim is to make the lives of women better. He said that the government’s next aim is to stop using plastic. Modi said that he is very honoured to receive the award on Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birthday.
