THEIR SCHOOL IS DRAPED IN SIGNS OF SUCCESS. 70% OF RONALD REAGAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE THE FIRST TO ATTEND COLLEGE IN THEIR FAMILIES, 70% DEAL WITH ISSUES OF POVERTY. ♪♪ KATHY: SINCE ERICA BREITBARTH HAS BEEN AT THE HELM, THE MUSIC PROGRAM HAS GROWN FROM 50 TO 400 KIDS AND NOW THEIR VERY OWN MISS B, IS UP FOR A GRAMMY, THE MUSIC EDUCATORS AWARD.>>IT IS INCREDIBLY EXCITING. KATHY: SHE’S ONE OF 10 MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS IN THE COUNTRY IN THE FINALS, 3300 WERE NOMINATED. SHE ALREADY FEELS LIKE A WINNER.>>A LOT OF MY STUDENTS WOULD SAY THAT THIS ROOM IS HOME FOR THEM. KATHY: NOW IN HER EIGHTH YEAR, HER FIRST CAME WITH A CHALLENGE.>>THERE WAS NO MUSIC PROGRAM HERE AT REAGAN AND THE PRINCIPAL SAID HERE’S A GRANT AND GO BUILD A PROGRAM. KATHY: LAST YEAR’S GRADS NOW THRIVING IN FINE ARTS WON $6 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS.>>AS A PERSON WHO IS NOT MARRIED AND I DON’T HAVE MIAMI KIDS, THESE ARE MY KIDS, AND I SEE THEM THAT WAY. KATHY: RYAN IS IN THE MEN’S CHOIR AND IS DELIGHTED TO BE IN THE CHORUS OF THE LATEST MUSICAL.>>IT HAS GIVEN ME A FAMILY, AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. ♪♪ KATHY: TATTY ACTUALLY CHOREOGRAPHED A NUMBER IN THE PLAY. SHE’S LEARNED TO COMPOSE MUSIC TOO.>>I REALLY LOVE THE CLASSIC ERA IN GENERAL, SO BEING ABLE TO CREATE MUSIC FROM THAT ERA IS AMAZING. KATHY: AND TWO YEARS AGO YOU COULD NOT DO WHAT?>>I COULDN’T READ MUSIC AT ALL. KATHY: BOTH RELY ON THEIR MUSIC COMMUNITY. AND MISS B MAKES IT KNOWN ANY OF HER KIDS CAN TALK ABOUT ANYTHING THEY FACE SHE NOTES SHE’S BEEN THERE WHEN IT COMES TO ANXIETY.>>I SEE IT AS A BENEFIT TO UNDERSTAND MY STUDENTS WHEN THEY ARE DEALING WITH ANXIETY O DEPRESSION. I CAN RELATE TO THEM. KATHY: HER OWN LOVE OF MUSIC STARTED AT HOMESTEAD HIGH IN MEQUON.>>I KNEW I WANTED TO BE A CHOIR DIRECTOR FROM THE SECOND DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR. SHE WENT ON TO STUDY AT WHEATON COLLEGE AND NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY WITH ONE THING IN MIND.>>I ONLY APPLIED FOR SCHOOLS IN URBAN AREAS BECAUSE I WANTED TO , BRING THE MUSIC EXPERIENCE I HAD AT HOMESTEAD TO A POPULATION WHO DIDN’T NECESSARILY HAVE THOSE EXPERIENCES FOR IT KATHY: IN TRUE TEAM EXPERIENCES. KATHY: IN TRUE TEAM SPIRIT SHE , WAITS TO HEAR THE WORD FROM THE GRAMMYS THROWING HER PASSION , INTO HER KIDS LATEST PRODUCTION, THE ADAMS FAMILY MUSICAL. MISS B IS THE VERY FIRST WISCONSIN TEACHER TO MAKE THE FINALS IN THE FOUR YEARS OF THE AWARD. SHE’LL FIND OUT IF SHE’S THE WINNER EARLY NEXT MONTH ABOUT
