Dustin Lance Black 2009 “MILK” Oscar speech

oh my God this was um this is not an easy film to make and first
off I have to think Cleve Jones and Anne Kronenberg and all the real life people who share their
stories with me, and um Gus Van Sant, Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin,
James Franko and our entire cast my producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen,
everyone Groundswell and Focus for taking on a challenging time is life-saving
story when I was thirteen years old my beautiful
mother and my father moved me from a conservative mormon home in San antonio Texas to California and I heard the story of Harvey Milk and it gave me hope gave me the hope to live my life it gave me the hope that one day I can live my life openly as who I am and that maybe
even I could fall in love and one day get married I wanna, I wanna thank my mom who has always loved me for who I am even
when there is pressure not to but most of all if Harvey had not been taken from us thirty
years ago I think you want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight
who have been told that they are “less-than” by their churches by the government or by their families that you are beautiful
wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you God
does love you and that very soon I promise you,
you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours Thank You! And Thank You God for giving us Harvey Milk!

  • @toddyoung1 sure thing..I also went through and corrected the captions. the last 2 or so captions are slightly off BY TIMING..but all the text is corrected! I noticed the original was only halfway correct!

  • Why is this sad? Because someone feels that being honest is important, or the fact that they need to convince those that orientation at times needs to be defended? Either way, i think this man had more courage than you or anyone else….especially in front of his audience.

  • bigot
One who is narrrowly or intolerantly devoted to his or her opinions and prejudices. This word is a general term that applies to everyone (racists, anti-Semites, misogynists, HOMOPHOBES and xenophobes).

  • and knowing that you had a moment of gay nature in your life is offensive in itself… that in my (and i am assuming most peoples) opinions is like saying that being Homosexual is a choice… If it were. i hope that i speak for all gay people when i say thank you for CHOOSING not to be!

  • Furthermore, for the record i am not gay. I believe that people should be able to live their lives free from the prying, judgmental eyes of people like you. To hell with you and i hope you get rundown by a PRIDE parade. Dustin Lance Black, I applaud you!
