Dr Tom Rufford – 2019 UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award winner

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions the
primary greenhouse gas in our atmosphere is a global challenge, new and efficient
technologies are urgently needed to help hit emission targets such as the carbon
capture and conversion process being developed by Dr. Tom Rufford. My research is looking at developing better technology to offset the cost of
emissions reduction by converting CO2 into useful products, essentially
recycling carbon rather than releasing it into the atmosphere. Converting even
10% of CO2 from worldwide steel production would cut 320 million tons of
CO2 emissions per year. For conversion technologies for CO2 already exist
the cost is currently too high for practical use I’m looking at developing
large-scale electrochemical processes that are not only more efficient but
also low-cost. Helping tackle global emission targets here in Australia and
around the world.
