Dr Sarah Bennett – 2019 UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award winner

In Australia around 26,000 cases of
sexual assault are reported to police each year but it’s estimated that’s only
about 15% of the total number of victims and of those cases that are reported the
majority, around 70% do not progress to a justice outcome for a range of reasons. Police are on the front line when responding to incidents of sexual
assault the manner in which police engage with survivors and conduct their
investigation is critical to justice outcomes. Dr. Sarah Bennett will conduct
the first experimental longitudinal study of the specialised Queensland
Police Service sexual assault investigation cause to measure and
determine its impact in actual cases. I’m working with the Queensland Police
Service to improve outcomes for those affected by sexual assault and bring
more offenders to justice through specialised training that targets the
knowledge skills and behavior of effective investigative practice.
