GROWING UP IN MANHATTAN, WE HAD SOME WAYS THAT TAXIS BUT, WHEN MOVING OUT HERE BECAME A REALITY, I KNEW I HAD TO LEARN TO DRIVE. SO I DID. IN ONE WEEK. IN THE BRONX. I PASSED MY ROAD TEST, AND I GOT MY DRIVER’S LICENSE. AND, ON MY FIRST DAY IN LOS ANGELES, I GOT PULLED OVER FOR SPEEDING. IT WAS FORESHADOWING BECAUSE I GET PULLED OVER ALL THE TIME. I HUNG ONTO THAT LICENSE LIKE MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT, FOR SIX YEARS I LIVED HERE AND DIDN’T GET RID OF IT UNTIL I GOT PULLED OVER AGAIN. THE COP PULLS ME OVER, THAT’S THE FIRST OFFENSE FOR SPEEDING AND HE TAKES MY NEW YORK DRIVER’S LICENSE, THAT’S MY SECOND OFFENSE AND I START CRYING. AND HE GOES “YOU NEED TO FIX HER LIFE.” AND I GO EXCUSE ME? I KNOW YOU NEED TO DO THAT. AND HE LOOKED AT ME SIDEWAYS AND ” SAID, “NO. YOU NEED TO FIX YOUR LIGHTS.” I HAD A BROKEN HEADLIGHT. BUT, AT THE TIME, BOTH INTERPRETATIONS MADE SENSE, SO I SET OUT TO FIX MY LIFE. I GOT A CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE. AND A PHONE IN THE 310. I DRINK GREEN JUICE NOW. AND I’VE STARTED MEDITATING. I GOT HAIR EXTENSIONS. I WISH I COULD ORDER A SALAD AT LUNCH BUT I REALLY WANT THAT BURGER. AND, SOMEDAY, I HOPE TO BE SOMEONE WHO LIKES TO GO ON HIKES, BUT HONESTLY, RIGHT NOW, THE IDEA OF WALKING UPHILL AND TALKING JUST STRESSES ME OUT. PETER WHO I MEANT IN 1999 WAS A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR FROM HUNGRY, HE WAS AN INSPIRATION, HE WAS RETIRED IN HIS 60s AND I FOLLOWED HIM AROUND FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES FROM INNER-CITY SCHOOLS TO SUBURBAN SCHOOLS TO HUNGARY WHERE HE WAS A HIDDEN CHILD OF THE HOLOCAUST AND IT’S PROBABLY THE BEST WORK I’VE EVER DONE BUT SUCH AN EASY THING TO DO IN SUCH AN INSPIRATIONAL THING TO DO TO WATCH WHAT HE DID ALL THE WAY THROUGH HIS FINAL DAYS. I COMPLETED THE DOCUMENTARY TWO MONTHS BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY AND CHANGE THE ENDING A LITTLE BIT. IT SHOWS YOU HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR JOURNALISTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON GOVERNMENT, WHETHER IT IS THE 100 YEARS AGO OR WHAT HAPPENED IN WESTERN EUROPE IN THE 30s AND 40s.
